Craniosacral

I am very passionate about the possibilities of what Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can help with and this has become my primary healing modality. Also available on request is Neurostructural Integration Technique (a version of Bowen Therapy), as well as DORN Method, and Tellington TTouch, which I may show some techniques as a way of supporting your healing process through self help. I am also available to work with animals providing these same therapies (click here for more info).

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapists recognise health as an active principle. This health is an inherent ordering force, a natural internal intelligence which is expressed as movement in the body. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a subtle and profound healing form which assists this natural bodily intelligence. Unlike other techniques that involve manipulations, this therapy is led by the client, allowing their system to set the pace at which adjustments take place and the order in which change occurs. Through extensive training the therapist has developed the skill to recognise tremendous detail of the anatomy and processes beneath the surface. Listening to the whole body through a craniosacral touch can bring about a reorganisation that is physiological, psychological and energetic.

Craniosacral Therapy originates in Osteopathy from the mid 1800s, and the work and teachings of the founder of Osteopathy, Dr AT Still, and of his student Dr WG Sutherland who developed an approach known as the “Cranial Concept”. Since then it has been refined into a profound, gentle and effective way of working with the whole body.

Stress/Trauma

The impact that increased and continual stress has on our overall health can be immensly significant. Numerous studies have shown how stress can depress the immune system and cause heart attacks. Many conditions, such as birth issues, physical pain, illnesses and psychological dysfunction also have their origins in physical, environmental or emotional trauma. From a biodynamic perspective, our systems become shaped by our experiences in life, and stress can interfere with our natural self regulation. This is especially true early in life when we are more vulnerable and difficulties have a greater potential to imprint the developing brain and body. This leads to patterns held in the body which can develop into abnormal physiology. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy works particularly well with these traumas, facilitating a safe resolution of shock and held experiences.

What is involved in a

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is not massage, reiki, chiropractic, physiotherapy, kinesiology, etc, yet it has the ability to address the body in a way that has similar results to all of these. During a treatment the client usually lies on a table, fully clothed and the therapist very gently holds various parts of the body to feel the subtle expressions and support the reorganisation towards a healthier state. Clients can often feel shifting in tissues, areas of warmth, tingling, a sense of expansion, or just a very deep relaxation as the mind becomes still and the body makes these changes. Many people can feel a greater sense of connection and awareness of their body as their relationship to health increases. The total time for a session is usually 45-60 minutes, but can be shorter, particularly with babies/infants.

Pregnancy, Mother, Babies and Children

Pregnancy is recognised as being a stressful process as the mothers body adjusts to cope with the babies demands. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can help support a women’s body adjust to the changes created through pregnancy. Birth itself can be highly traumatic on the mother, but also the baby which is also involved in the compressive forces through the birthing process. Working with mothers and babies postnatally can support recovery from the rigours of childbirth. Many infant problems such as colic, irritability, feeding and sleeping difficulties can often be resolved. Difficulties with falling pregnant are also something in which this therapy can greatly help.

Help for animals

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can also provide help for animals such as dogs, cats, horses, birds and even reptiles. The nature of the work can often help animals that are hyperactive, fearful, reactive or showing other signs of emotional/behavioural imbalance. It is also very beneficial for physical injuries they have sustained or other illnesses that have developed. As with this work with adults or particularly babies, the pace of the treatment is led by the animal involved. Treatments may also involve working with close family members as this often has a great outcome.

What are the benefits of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can provide help with various conditions such as physical pain and dysfunction, mental and emotional difficulties and many health concerns. Treatments can lead to changes in areas of restriction and discomfort, and an optimising of overall health. Clients often experience more energy, resilience, calmness and mental clarity. Through treatments a client can develop greater vitality and well being, an improvement in symptoms and a movement away from old patterns and dis-ease. As this is a gentle therapy, it is suitable for all ages, including newborns, the elderly and people with delicate, degenerative or painful conditions. For a list of some of the many conditions that can be treated, see the menu tab above.

So what does this mean for you if you are thinking of seeing a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist, but are not sure what it is about or what they are going to do to help resolve whatever disease or health issues you have? The thing to keep in mind is this is very subtle work at times (you may not notice too much depending on your level of body awareness) but it can be extremely powerful work in that it is more about seeing a dynamic shift in health expression rather than just concerning ourselves with individual symptoms. Some people may see changes in one or two treatment sessions, where as others may have much deeper  or more complex patterns that take a handful of treaments and then there can be others who have stresses in their life that continue to impact on their health and find that regular ongoing treatments allow them to function and cope better. Ultimately we are trying to improve your relationship to the natural expressions of health.
